The International Forum aims to highlight the critical role of education as a catalyst in strengthening the interface between science and public policy, promoting citizenship, and fostering contributions from all fields of knowledge to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy ocean for a resilient society in the face of climate change. The event will address the relevance of educating informed and proactive citizens to navigate a changing world, drawing from examples at local to global levels and integrating topics such as food security, an inclusive and sustainable blue economy, knowledge diversity, and sustainable development.
Through the concept of ocean literacy, central to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the forum emphasizes the need to engage educators, policymakers, and civil society in building climate and socio-environmental solutions. Initiatives such as the Blue Curriculum have played a crucial role in aligning education with global goals, including the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, fostering citizens who understand the interconnections between the ocean, terrestrial and polar ecosystems, climate, and sustainable development.
Brazil, a leader in ocean science and ocean literacy projects in the Global South, brings forward innovative examples ranging from municipal and state legislation to ongoing processes for national curriculum integration. We invite representatives from different educational sectors worldwide to join us in discussing how education can serve as a bridge between science, policy, and society, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
